Chapter 13
When Darren slammed through the front door of the salon, I stepped in his way immediately. Heâd have to get through me before he could berate the people who had nothing to do with his loss or any of the bad things that had been happening to him lately. âSlow down. Take a breath. Think this through before you make a big mess. Bigger mess I guess is a more accurate phrase.â
âI donât need your cutesiness or your shenanigans right now. I need you to step aside. I want that girl, and I want whatâs mine.â
âAnd youâll get it. I have it under control. Do not go yell at Merry or Iâll make it harder than even you can imagine to get the property you want. I just talked to Goldy so Iâve been brought up to date. Donât make this worse than it has to be.â
He was nearly vibrating with rage when I put my hand on his arm, but he seemed to collect himself. He straightened his tie, smoothed down his hair, and then nodded. All the tension and steam didnât necessarily go out of the air, but it definitely moved from DEFCON one to more like a four.
âNow, weâre going to be very nice to Merry and explain that your property is important to you and youâd appreciate any help she can give you to get it returned. In the meantime, I believe I have the woman in hand. Sheâll be here soon if Nick can be convincing enough and crafty enough.â
At that he scoffed. And, look, it was one thing for me to make fun of my brother, that was part of the sibling code, but no one else was allowed to think he was anything but wonderful.
âI wouldnât be such a shit if I were you. I could have let her leave and done nothing to help. Thereâs a bunch of stuff going on here and nearly everything is tied to you in some way. Iâm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but your credit is about to be overdrawn.â
His shoulders drooped. Iâd hit a nerve, but I didnât care as long as he played nice and knew he was hanging by a thread.
âMerry, you said Narina took off from the funeral parlor?â I asked.
âYes.â Short, precise, but not happy. Then again, who was right now?
âAnd when did she go over there?â
The receptionist took that one. âAbout an hour ago.â
âAnd when did you find the necklace missing?â I asked Darren.
âAbout six minutes ago, give or take a few seconds.â
âOkay, letâs sit tight for a second. Goldy will be here soon, and Iâm hoping so will your culprit.â
Since there was nothing really to do but wait, I wandered around. I picked up a magazine here and a magazine there, flipping through and then putting them back, making sure they were aesthetically pleasing in the way they were laid out.
I had run out of magazines and had moved to making sure the labels on all the product on the shelves faced front by the time Goldy finally came through the door.
